Great films are those than can inspire people long after they have seen the movie. But even before being considered great, a movie begins with a simple story that is built from the ground up. Sure, it takes a lot of effort in writing a screenplay, but also takes skills to write a decent one.
While it takes several years of hands-on experience to learn how to write a screenplay, there are basic skills that should be learned by anyone who wants to become a screenwriter. Below is a list of a few of them.
- As stated earlier, the screenplay begins with a simple story. So if you have one, it would be good to put it on paper. You don’t have to go in further detail immediately. Actually, you can write just what the story is about. For example, you can state that it is about a woman who likes a man who likes another man. You can’t get any simpler than that.
- Once you have the basic story written down, you can now move on to giving your story some flesh. There may have been a lot of stories written about love, for example, but it’s in the way you write it can the difference be found.
- When expanding your story, it would help if you have a basic outline of your entire story. As they say, every story has beginning, middle and an end. Make sure you know what happens in each part.
- Another essential factor in a screenplay is the dialogue. Keep your dialogues as natural as possible, unless you intentionally want to make it sound artificial. Need to be inspired in writing dialogues down? You could start by listening to other people’s conversations. Yes, it’s rude, but it can educate you a lot in writing good dialogues.
